Nigel leaned back in his chair, feet up on his desk. He stared at the ceiling, trying to ignore the discomfort of headphones pressing down on his ears. They canceled out all noise around him, which made it easier to make out what might be happening in the house but it also hurt after about an hour and a half.

Going on four hours, he felt like his head might implode. He planned on having lunch soon, letting the computer take over listening again. After going through every email he had, answering numerous questions about his other work, and catching up on all his news sites, he felt like he’d been working for ten hours.

He yawned, his ears popping painfully in the process. It made him wince as he dropped his feet to the floor and stood. A sound caught his attention, a door closing. At first, he was convinced it came from somewhere in the hallway, just outside his office. Footsteps on wood made his heart pound.

Someone’s at the house. Pressing the headphones tighter into his ears, Nigel sat back down, leaning forward, as if it might enhance the volume. A moment passed. He recognized there were at least three or more people wandering around in the cabin. Up until then, he’d only heard the caretaker and his dog.

“Put up here,” a male’s voice made Nigel’s chest tingle with anticipation. It was a new person. He double checked that the computer was recording the man, letting out a sigh of relief when he saw the meters pinging. “I’ll hold this room. Be sure the others are well taken care of. They’ve got a big day.”

“How many are we expecting?” That was the caretaker. Nigel knew his voice well. He felt like he lived with the guy considering how often he heard him speak. I’ve felt guilty about eavesdropping he’s been so normal too. “Help me determine the supply requirements. I’ve got enough for a month if we’ve got less than thirty people.”

“Might be about that, I can’t say for sure.” The other man hummed. “They’ll be arriving by the main road though. I’ve got two people out there keeping track. Everything’s paid up, right? We shouldn’t expect any visitors? No one looking to make a buck on us or anything like that?”

“No, I’ve been thorough. Any maintenance has been accomplished by me. We’re good. Wifi is up and functioning.”

“Alright then. Good. I’m moving my stuff in. You get some grub on. I expect our guests around five o’clock this afternoon. Make sure they have something hot to eat, man. Make more than you think you need, just in case. I have a feeling they’ll be hungry. It’s a long ass drive to get here. Serious pain in the ass.”

“They wanted off the beaten path … I gave it to them. This is the requirement, man. I’m not sure why you’re—”

“Shut up, old man. I didn’t ask you to complain or defend yourself. Just do as you’re told. Get your ass to work.
